Video: Welcome to the National Laboratories & Security Office

Back in March, 2025, was the first, formal announcement of the newly formed NLSO, or National Labs & Security Office, here at the University of Utah. Learn more in this new video here.

Funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Laboratories are key drivers of research and innovation in science and technology. The National Labs address large scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation.

There are seventeen National Laboratories spread across the United States – a reminder that the NLSO is here to work with labs and agencies for:

  • Developing Contracts, MOUs, and Agreement
  • Establishing and Maintaining Research Connections
  • Supporting Researcher and Student Placement
  • Aligning the University with National Strategy

Currently the University of Utah has agreements with the Idaho National Labs (INL) and Sandia. In addition to working with National Labs, the NLSO is the point for contact for the university partnership with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), providing unique research and educational opportunities for our students and faculty.

Recent News & Announcements

On May 19, 2025, the University of Utah hosted a Sandia National Laboratories BOOST Workshop, bringing together participants from academia, local government, and the entrepreneurial community. The workshop focused on identifying Utah’s most pressing energy needs and brainstorming innovative solutions, including new programs, organizations, and business ventures aimed at meeting those challenges.

The DOE BOOST (Bridging Opportunities and Outreach for Startup Transformation) program supports entrepreneurs working in energy and national security sectors by offering mentorship, technical guidance, and opportunities for collaboration with DOE labs and other stakeholders. The event served as a platform for knowledge sharing, relationship building, and seeding new ideas to drive Utah’s energy future forward. The energy, collaboration, and ideas that emerged from this gathering reflect the real potential for long-term impact in Utah and beyond.

Coming up: INL and Sandia are both partners for Utah Energy Week (UEW), September 15 – 18, 2025, at the University of Utah. Learn more about this exciting event here.
