DATASET Initiative looking for a Faculty Co-Director

The Data Science Ethics and Technology (DATASET) Initiative was launched in fall of 2022 to engage in foundational questions about the role of data in science and society. DATASET aims to bring together research and expertise in the theoretical, technical, ethical, historical, and policy/legal dimensions of data across the University of Utah.

The DATASET Initiative is currently led by Prof. Manish Parashar, Prof. Olivia Sheng, and Dr. Penny Atkins along with an Advisory Board consisting of six faculty members from the Departments of Entertainment Arts and Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Management, Psychiatry, and Psychology. DATASET is part of the One Utah Data Science Hub and currently sponsors yearly programs for discovery workshops and the One Utah Data Science Hub seed grants.

Prof. Olivia Sheng has recently accepted a professor position at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. As such, the DATASET Initiative is looking to recruit a faculty co-director to serve alongside Prof. Manish Parashar.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Help to develop the vision and specific activities of the DATASET Initiative, including engagement with the DATASET Advisory Board
  • Engagement in weekly DATASET and Hub leadership meetings (1.5 hrs/week) to help drive the direction and make progress in focus areas
  • Execution of DATASET and Hub activities, such as the seed grant and workshop proposal programs
  • Build synergy with the DELPHI Initiative and the Utah Center for Data Science

Informational Session

Current DATASET leadership will be hosting a virtual information session about this role on April 12 at 12:00 pm and look forward to engaging in discussion with you. Please reach out to Penny Atkins, if you have interest or questions about this role outside of the informational session.

All interested faculty should engage their Departmental Leadership to ensure support of their involvement and send their current CV and a 1-page cover letter expressing their interest in leading the DATASET Initiative, including their vision for the goals, activities, and impact of the DATASET Initiative and why they would be a good leader of the Initiative, to Penny Atkins by April 30, 2023.
