What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely no jargon.

Bring scientific stories, practices, and principles to the public in a way that fosters curiosity and a sense of ownership of science. Promote science as a way to solve problems, large and small.

How is it done today, and what are the limits of current practice?

Some science communicators talk about science in ways that doesn’t connect with the greater public, limiting the impact of science and not fully repairing the breach in trust between the public and science that has deepened in recent years.

What is new in your approach and why do you think it will be successful?

All of my communication is in context – I want to show how potentially unfamiliar concepts have relevance in the familiar aspects of people’s lives. I write in clear, accurate, accessible terms. At the Genetic Science Learning Center, we write educational modules and curricula that dispel misconceptions and build accurate attitudes and ideas about science from school age.

Who cares? If you are successful, what difference will it make?

Science is an exercise in humility. It’s decisions made and problems solved using objective data and an aggregation of evidence – the opposite of how many in today’s society think and act. If I’m successful, we can raise a new generation that can see through the dishonesty and fallacies we see all around us.
