FY27 Call for Applications
The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ (NCATS) Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA) program and the Utah Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) aim to improve the efficiency, quality, and impact of translating research from the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that enhance health. CTSI supports high-quality clinical and translational science to improve research effectiveness and the health of all individuals, goals that depend on active community engagement, collaboration, and participation.
Application Focus
Leveraging CTSA and institutional funding, the Utah CTSI’s Community and Academic Partnership Pilot (CAPP) program supports collaborations between community organizations in Utah and adjacent states and CTSI-affiliated academic partners addressing one or more focal areas:
Translational Research focuses on moving established scientific discoveries into practical use by implementing, adapting, and evaluating them in real-world settings. It emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and the use of best practices to ensure that proven interventions are effectively adopted and deliver measurable benefits at the population level.
Translational Science (TS) Innovation focuses on developing generalizable solutions—such as methodologies, tools, technologies, or training—to overcome barriers in the translational process and accelerate research. Projects may develop, demonstrate, or disseminate innovations that improve research efficiency and effectiveness.
Advancing Human Health supports efforts to generate new knowledge and develop novel interventions that have not yet been established. This includes creating and testing new behavioral, preventive, diagnostic, or treatment strategies that emerge from observations in the laboratory, clinic, or community, with the goal of improving future health outcomes.
Understanding and Reducing Health Differences focuses on improving health and healthcare access across populations, including rural and frontier communities with limited access, by studying these differences and developing strategies to enhance care delivery and outcomes.
CAPP requires close, equitable collaboration between community and academic partners, with each project co-led by a PI from each group. Funded projects are expected to produce publications or presentations and generate data to support future external funding (e.g., NIH).
CAPP Program Eligibility Criteria
- Collaboration between a Community PI and an Academic PI is required:
- Community PIs are researchers or non-researchers of a Community Organization located in Utah or the surrounding states (Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming). For this CAPP application, community organizations are defined as local, regional, or national non-profit, non-governmental entities that represent, engage, or serve a defined geographic area or population, with the aim of promoting health through advocacy, service provision, or both. Other quasi-governmental entities, such as local school districts or tribal governments may also be eligible, provided their primary mission aligns with promoting community health and well-being (please check with CAPP director at cho.lam@hci.utah.edu for eligibility).
- Academic PIs are researchers who hold a faculty or equivalent appointment (e.g, VA staff scientist) at the University of Utah, the University of Nevada, Reno, the Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System, or Intermountain Healthcare.
- Successful projects align with this Funding Opportunity Announcement’s (FOA) focus areas, as described above.
- Applicants with significant start-up funds, cash reserves, or seeking gap funding to bridge support between external grants or contracts are not eligible.
- The proposed project should not be funded by any other mechanism/research initiative at the time of submission.
