What it is: Limited Submission Opportunities (LSO) are external funding opportunities that limit the number of applications the University of Utah can submit. All agencies (including foundation, federal, state, etc.) use limited submission requirements from time to time to increase quality and speed of external review, avoid overwhelming reviewers with repetitive applications, and to encourage institutions to internally vet and submit their strongest proposals.
Why it matters: Researchers must be selected through an internal competition before applying to the sponsor on all LSOs. Internal competitions help verify the eligibility of an applicant and ensure that another application has not already been selected to submit to an LSO. Missing the internal process can put a proposal or the University at risk — even if the sponsor deadline has not passed.
Who should subscribe: Faculty, principal investigators, research development professionals, and administrators who should receive notice of limited submission opportunities, internal competitions, relevant deadlines, etc. as soon as they are announced.
What to do: Subscribe to receive notices when new internal competitions open, deadlines are approaching or submission slots remain available. Review all University policies, best practices, and procedures around LSOs. Continue to contact vprgrants@utah.edu as soon as you become aware of an LSO and prior to submitting any pre-application or LOI information to the program’s sponsor.
