To strengthen protection of University of Utah information and systems, the university is updating how outside organizations — including partner institutions, vendors, and research collaborators — connect to the university network.
Beginning August 11, 2026, these external connections must be approved in advance. This change will not affect normal internet access from university computers or routine use of web-based services.
Leadership action requested: Please forward this memo to your designated IT contact and ask them to confirm that any needed external connections have been identified and approved before August 11. Units that have already completed this work do not need to take additional action.
Why this matters
Many areas already use this approach, including the clinical networks, where it has been implemented successfully. Applying the same safeguard across the university creates a consistent standard and reduces institutional risk while continuing to support clinical, academic, and research partnerships.
Resources for IT teams
IT teams can use the existing online request process to arrange approved access. The IT staff implementation checklist and external access request form provide the necessary guidance.
