Positioning U Research on the National Stage for Defense Health Innovation

By Xoel Cardenas, Sr. Communications Specialist, Office of the Vice President for Research

Dr. Erin Rothwell, Vice President for Research at the University of Utah, has been selected to chair the newly launched Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC) Academic Advisory Council (MAAC). The council convenes leading academic experts to accelerate the transition of cutting-edge medical research into lifesaving solutions for military service members, veterans, and their families.

MTEC, in partnership with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), unites academia, industry, and government to deliver innovations that serve both military and civilian needs. By chairing the MAAC, Dr. Rothwell will help guide how academic expertise is applied to urgent health challenges and ensure promising discoveries reach those who need them most.

Impact for U Research:

  • Elevated national role: Positions the U as a leader in military and civilian medical innovation.
  • Expanded opportunities: Creates new pathways for collaborations and funding in defense health research.
  • Accelerated real-world application: Moves U discoveries more quickly from research to the people and communities who need them.Strategic connections: Builds relationships with academic, industry, and government partners nationwide.

“This is an exciting opportunity to focus on turning cutting-edge research into real-world impact, in particular for those who serve in the military as well as their families,” Rothwell said. “I’m proud to represent the University of Utah in helping lead this important work.”

Alongside Rothwell, MAAC members include Dr. Sofia Matta (Vice Chair), Senior Director of Medical Services at Home Base National Center of Excellence; Dr. Vik Bebarta, University of Colorado; and Dr. Ronald Poropatich, University of Pittsburgh.
