The Post Forward Together: November Update

Forward Together: November Update

Colleagues,

As we enter this season of gratitude, I want to reflect on the people, purpose, and potential that define U Health. Across our system, I’m continually inspired by the compassion, expertise, and resilience you bring to your work, whether in clinical care, research, education, or community service. Thank you for showing up for one another and for the patients, learners, and communities who count on us. Your dedication, adaptability, and commitment to our shared mission powers our progress.

This month, as we also observe Veterans Day, I want to express deep appreciation for those in our community who have served our nation and for the many ways you continue to serve others through your work here. That same spirit of service is reflected in the strong partnerships we’re building and the feedback we’ve received, from expanding access through collaborations in our community and region to your participation in the Better U Survey. I’m inspired by your willingness to lend your voice to help shape a more connected, innovative, and people-centered health system.

WHERE WE’RE HEADING:
Reaffirming Our Shared Vision for U Health

Together, we are building a more integrated academic health system where world-class care, pioneering research, transformative education, and strong community partnerships come together to improve the lives of everyone in Utah—not just those who come through our doors. Our shared purpose extends across the state and Mountain West, helping to shape a healthier future for all.

PILLAR IN ACTION:
Fostering an Innovation and Scholarship Culture

On the Good Notes blog, Rachel Hess, MD, MS, inaugural Health System Chief Research Officer, and Jim Hotaling, MD, inaugural Chief Innovation Officer, discuss steps we’re taking to build a campus-wide culture where scientific discoveries can be translated into innovations with societal impact. With new leadership roles and structures, U Health is empowering clinicians, researchers, and students to collaborate, experiment, and turn ideas into real-world solutions at a faster pace.

What does “a culture of innovation” mean to you, and how do you see it shaping the future of health care and education at U Health? Share your ideas at Together@hsc.utah.edu.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE: LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS
What are you most excited about when you consider the
future of research innovation at U Health?

“What excites me most is the cultural shift that’s happening at U Health. We’re expanding how we think about research. We’re cultivating an environment where researchers see the translational and commercial potential of their work. By giving them expert guidance, tools, and resources, we’re creating a path for moving ideas from the lab to the world. Connecting curiosity to real-world impact is how we’ll strengthen our role as a national leader in health innovation and ensure our discoveries truly improve lives.”

–Jim Hotaling, Chief Innovation Officer, U Health
