In scientific departments across the University of Utah, a new generation of researchers are tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing the American West. From the depths of geothermal reservoirs to the peaks of snow-covered mountains, five graduate students are pioneering innovative solutions that promise to reshape the Southwest’s environmental and economic landscape for decades to come.
Working with the NSF Futures Engine in the Southwest United States led by Arizona State University, these students’ work spans the spectrum of sustainability challenges—from clean energy storage and geothermal power to electric vehicle adoption, snow hydrology, and regional policy coordination. Together, they represent a comprehensive approach to building resilience in a state where rapid population growth, climate change, and resource constraints are creating unprecedented challenges.
