From the first artificial heart to cutting-edge advances in AI, energy, and medicine, research at the University of Utah continues to shape how we live, work, and thrive. As the state’s flagship R1 university, the U drives innovation that strengthens Utah’s economy, workforce, and quality of life.
A new analysis by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute confirms that University of Utah research delivers broad and measurable value to the state. In FY2025, the U’s $734 million in research expenditures supported over 12,700 jobs, generated $1.6 billion in statewide economic output, and produced a net positive fiscal impact of $11.1 million for the state of Utah.
These findings, detailed in the Economic and Fiscal Impacts of Research at the University of Utah technical memo, complement the University Research: Advancing Utah’s Economy, Workforce, and Life Quality report, which highlights how discovery at the U fuels innovation, strengthens communities, and improves lives across Utah.
“Research at the University of Utah is an investment in Utah’s future, every research dollar invested here multiplies across our economy,” said Dr. Erin Rothwell, Vice President for Research. “It supports innovation, drives workforce growth, and creates solutions that improve daily life in Utah communities.”
