James M. Hotaling, MD, Named Chief Innovation Officer for U of U Health

Innovation at the U is accelerating — from an uptick in the startup pipeline through the Utah Venture Hub to new leadership roles like Chief Innovation Officer at U of U Health, reinforcing the University of Utah’s long-recognized leadership in turning discovery into impact.

University of Utah Health has appointed James M. Hotaling, MD, as its first Chief Innovation Officer, a role created to centralize and accelerate innovation across the health system. Hotaling has also been leading efforts at the Utah Venture Hub, where the U has already seen measurable growth in its startup pipeline.

“I’ve seen firsthand the incredible ideas coming out of the U, from our clinics to our labs to the Venture Hub.” Said Hotaling. “As Chief Innovation Officer at U of U Health, I want to help clear the path so those ideas can move faster into the world, where they make a real difference for patients and communities.”

“Jim’s appointment reflects the momentum building across the U to move ideas from discovery to impact,” said Erin Rothwell, PhD, Vice President for Research. “His leadership will strengthen our ability to translate health research into real-world solutions and expand Utah’s role as a national leader in academic innovation.”
