Action Item: Please share broadly with interested faculty, staff, and research administrators.

Research Community,

We want to make you aware of recent announcements from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) regarding funding for FY25.

NCI has released updated guidance noting that, due to upfront funding constraints and ongoing budget uncertainty, the agency expects to award fewer R01 grants this cycle. The guidance also states that applications from investigators with fewer than three active awards may be prioritized. While the implications of this policy are still unfolding, we are monitoring developments closely and will share additional information as it becomes available.

In addition, there was a brief pause this week on NIH research and training grant funding, which was reversed later that same day following approval from the Office of Management and Budget. Although short-lived, this pause has prompted questions across the research community.

At this time, no immediate changes to funding at the University of Utah are expected, and we will continue to follow agency guidance as it evolves. If you have questions about a specific grant or submission, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your program officer or the Office of Sponsored Projects.

We remain committed to keeping our community informed and supported.
