Online CITI Training
University of Utah investigators and study staff who conduct human subject research must complete one of the following training initiatives before the IRB will approve a project(s):
- Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) or
- VA Good Clinical Practice Training or
- Human Participant Protections Education for Research Teams
The University of Utah will honor the certificate for five years from the date of completion. After five years, training will need to be repeated.
Please Note: The IRB will not waive the training requirements for those who have viewed the NIH training video or NIH web training.
About CITI
The University of Miami Collaborative IRB Training Initiative is an interactive set of modules designed to improve knowledge of the Common Rule, HIPPA Privacy Rule, and Good Clinical Practices for individuals involved in human subjects research. Please see the CITI Instructions for information on setting up and completing the training.
Please go to www.citiprogram.org to register. The next page will ask you to select your institution or organization.
- If you plan to conduct research at the University of Utah, Primary Children's Medical Center, or Shriners please indicate "University of Utah" under the "All Others" section.
- If you plan to conduct research at the VA, please select "Salt Lake City, UT 660." This option will meet VA requirements for annual training. Any researcher can complete the VA training for a review or introduction to Good Clinical Practices.
The self-registration page will ask you which course you plan to take. Please choose the course most appropriate for the type of research you conduct. Board members and IRB staff must select the Social & Behavioral and Biomedical course.
After you create your username and password, you can log-in to the CITI homepage at any time in the future.
Please Note: Registering for the CITI Training does not create your account with the ERICA System - you must do this separately. For instructions on how to register with the ERICA System, please read the log in instructions on ERICA's login page.
Helpful Hints:
Each course contains modules that end with a series of questions. You must answer these questions correctly to get credit for completing a module. The system will allow you to begin, save your session, and complete it later. Once you have completed all the modules, you will be able to access a copy of your training certificate. You must achieve an 80% average to pass the course. If you have not achieved an 80% average, you will not be able to access a copy of your completion certificate. You may retake select chapters to improve your average and earn your completion certificate. Please maintain a copy of the completion certificate for your personal records. Please email the University of Utah IRB or the CITI System Administrator if you have questions or experience technical problems.
