Investigator & Research Staff Training

The University of Utah Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) offers several resources for investigators, staff, and board members who want to learn more about the ethical conduct of research and associated requirements at our institution. The HRPP conducts many training activities throughout the year. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions or would like to address a specific topic please contact us via email or telephone (801) 581-3655.

University of Utah investigators and study staff who conduct human subject research must complete one of the following training initiatives before the IRB will approve a project(s):

  1. Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI)(VA modules or University of Utah modules, as applicable) or
  2. VA Good Clinical Practice Training or
  3. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Protecting Human Research Participants (PHRP) Training or
  4. IRB Human Subject Research Training

For non-VA researchers, the University of Utah will honor a valid training certificate for five years from the date of completion. After five years, training will need to be repeated. For VA researchers, the CITI VA modules must be completed every year to satisfy VA research requirements.

Please Note: The IRB will not waive the training requirements for those who have viewed the NIH training video or NIH web training.

Online CITI Training

The University of Miami Collaborative IRB Training Initiative is an interactive set of modules designed to improve knowledge of the Common Rule, HIPPA Privacy Rule, and Good Clinical Practices for individuals involved in human subjects research. Please see the CITI Instructions for information on setting up and completing the training.

Please go to www.citiprogram.org to register. The next page will ask you to select your institution or organization.

  • If you plan to conduct research at the University of Utah, Primary Children's Medical Center, or Shriners please indicate "University of Utah" under the "All Others" section.
  • If you plan to conduct research at the VA, please select "Salt Lake City, UT 660." This option will meet VA requirements for annual training. Any researcher can complete the VA training for a review or introduction to Good Clinical Practices.

The self-registration page will ask you which course you plan to take. Please choose the course most appropriate for the type of research you conduct. Board members and IRB staff must select the Social & Behavioral and Biomedical course.

After you create your username and password, you can log-in to the CITI homepage at any time in the future.

Please Note: Registering for the CITI Training does not create your account with the ERICA System - you must do this separately. For instructions on how to register with the ERICA System, please read the log in instructions on ERICA's login page.

Helpful Hints
  • Each course contains modules that end with a series of questions. You must answer these questions correctly to get credit for completing a module.
  • The system will allow you to begin, save your session, and complete it later.
  • Once you have completed all the modules, you will be able to access a copy of your training certificate.
  • You must achieve an 80% average to pass the course. If you have not achieved an 80% average, you will not be able to access a copy of your completion certificate.
  • You may retake select chapters to improve your average and earn your completion certificate. Please maintain a copy of the completion certificate for your personal records.
  • Please email the University of Utah IRB or the CITI System Administrator if you have questions or experience technical problems.
  • For non-VA researchers, the IRB will honor a completed certificate for five years from the date of completion. For VA researchers, the CITI VA Modules must be completed every year to satisfy VA research requirements.

IRB Human Subject Training Certificate

The IRB now offers a new online training option called the IRB Human Subject Research Training Certificate, offered through the Research Administration Training Series (RATS) at the University of Utah. This new online certificate program provides training in conducting ethical research specific to the federal regulations, Utah State law, and University of Utah policies. Completion of this online certificate may be counted toward your training requirements for submission to the IRB and conducting research at the University of Utah.

This training is offered as another option with the other online training courses previously accepted by the IRB. This training is offered as a certificate program, meaning that you have to take 4 classes to complete the full certificate. The IRB will not accept incomplete certificates if all 4 classes are not complete.

To earn the certificate for IRB Human Subject Research Training you must complete 11 total modules, covered in 4 classes. The first 8 modules are required for the certificate and are covered in the UU IRB: Criteria for Approval of Institutional Review Board (IRB) Research class:

  • Ethical Principles
  • IRB Submissions
  • Risks and Benefits

  • Informed Consent – Additional Considerations
  • Data and Safety Monitoring

The remaining modules/classes are electives and you can choose to complete the modules/classes that are most relevant to your research. You must complete at least 3 of the following modules/classes in order to earn the training certificate:

  • UU IRB: Elective - Conducting Social and Behavioral Science Research
  • UU IRB: Elective – Conducting Main Campus Research
  • UU IRB: Elective – Conducting Biomedical Research
  • UU IRB: Elective – Conducting Research at Primary Children’s Medical Center
