- Provides staff member to serve on IACUC to:
- Review and register use of any viruses, bacteria,
parasites, as appropriate, for submitted protocols
- Review and register use of any toxic chemicals, carcinogens,
other toxins, as appropriate, for submitted protocols
- Refer relevant protocols to Biosafety Subcommittee
- Provides training resource in the Occupational Health
and Safety Program for animal researchers
- Provides assessment of safety risks within animal facilities
and laboratories
- Provides assessment of safety risks in animal housing

- Serves as the primary technical resource for the University
research community regarding environmental health and safety
policies, procedures, and regulatory issues
- Provides staff to serve on Radiation Safety Committee,
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and IACUC
- Executes enforcement actions as prescribed by institutional
policy or committee decision
- Conducts special risk assessments and provides recommendations
on appropriate practices and facilities to conduct research
safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements
- Conducts periodic review of research facilities and/or
procedures to ensure compliance (IACUC only)
- Provides operational and/or technical support for research
activities that require monitoring, tracking, decontamination,
or disposal of potentially hazardous and/or regulated materials
- Identifies training resources for the University research
community
- Identifies, monitors, and interprets local, state, and
federal agency actions related to environmental health and
safety for implementation within the University research
community
- Develops draft policies/procedures for oversight committee
review
- Provides an annual report of activities to the Vice President
for Administrative Services

- Serves as the primary technical resource for the University
research community regarding policies, procedures, and regulatory
issues in human gene transfer
- Supports the institution research activities that require
decontamination, or disposal of potentially hazardous and/or
regulated material
- Provides emergency response assistance to spills or other
critical events involving potentially hazardous and/or regulated
materials
- Identifies training resources. In particular, supports
the activities and membership of the Institutional Biosafety
Committee (IBC)
- Conducts special risk assessments and provides recommendations
on appropriate practices and facilities to conduct research
safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements
- Provides operational and/or technical support for the
University research community
- Identifies, monitors, and interprets local, state, and
federal agency actions related to human gene transfer for
implementation within the University research community
