COMMITTEE/ANIMAL RESOURCE CENTERS

| The principle purposes of the IACUC are to aid investigators,
laboratory personal and research facility administrators in
the development of sound policies to govern the humaneness of
animal experiments and to ensure compliance with current national
policies |

| Animal welfare:
|
- Reviews the institution's program for humane care and
use of animals at least once every six months
- Inspects all of the institution's animal facilities at
least once every six months
- Prepares reports of IACUC evaluations and submits to VP
for Research
- Reviews (investigates) concerns involving care and use
of animals
- Makes recommendations to the VP for Research regarding
any aspect of the institution's animal program, facilities,
or training.
- Reviews and approves, requires modifications or withholds
approval of those components of research, testing or teaching
activities related to the care and use of animals
- Reviews and approves, requires modifications or withholds
approval of proposed significant changes regarding the use
of animals in ongoing activities
- Suspends an activity involving animals for noncompliance
- Assesses safety risks of animal housing facilities (with
Department of Environmental Health and Safety)

| Biosafety/recombinant
DNA: |
- Requires classification of biosafety levels, as appropriate,
on submitted protocols
- Requires review and registration of use of any viruses,
bacteria, parasites, as appropriate, for submitted protocols
- Requests advice on appropriate procedures for safe conduct
of animal use involving infectious agents and recombinant
DNA
- Requires review of research proposals and ongoing research
for compliance with NIH and CDC guidelines for research
with rDNA molecules as needed

review and approval of any use of toxic chemicals, carcinogens,
other toxins, as appropriate, for submitted protocols
- Requires training in the Occupational Health and Safety
Program for animal researchers

and laboratories
- Obtains assessment of safety risk in animal housing
