  • Ensures that all staff on project are adequately trained and certified in order to assure humane care and use of animals
  • Reports any violations of animal care and use regulations to IACUC office
  • Completes periodic training to remain current on federal, state, and local regulations, institutional policies and procedures, and animal care and use technology

  • Assures that project is in compliance with state, federal, sponsor and University of Utah policies and regulations regarding animal welfare
  • Provides for peer-review of all protocols not supported by grants prior to review by IACUC, by at least two individuals, one of whom can be the department chair. However, the Chair must sign the approved protocol
  • Promotes University compliance efforts and programs regarding animal welfare

    • Refer issues to the IACUC Biosafety Subcommittee
  • Provides training in the Occupational Health and Safety Program for animal researchers
  • Provides assessment of safety risks within animal facilities and laboratories

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee/
Animal Resource Center:
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee:
  • Review the institution's program for humane care and use of animals at least once every six months
  • Inspect all of the institution's animal facilities at least once every six months
  • Prepare reports of IACUC evaluations and submit to VP for Research
  • Review (investigate) concerns involving care and use of animals
  • Make recommendations to the VP for Research regarding any aspect of the institution's animal program, facilities, or training
  • Review and approve, require modifications or withhold approval of those components of research, testing or teaching activities related to the care and use of animals
  • Review and approve, require modifications or withhold approval of proposed significant changes regarding the use of animals in ongoing activities
  • Suspend an activity involving animals for noncompliance
  • Assess safety risks of animal housing facilities (with Department of Environmental Health and Safety)
  • Assess training of all researchers and staff that work with animals

Institutional Training Coordinator:
  • Provides training in the Occupational Health and Safety Program for animal researchers
  • Provides Animal Care and Use Core training and Species-Specific training for Principal Investigator, staff, and students that work with animals

  • Provides information, analyses, and counsel to assist management in ethically, effectively, and efficiently fulfilling their management responsibilities
  • Examines, assesses and reports on existing accountability and controls
  • Reviews sufficiency and appropriateness ofthe Animal Resources Center's pricing structure. Supports management with advice and guidance on updating rate structure
 
Radiological Health, Department:
  • Provides review and approval of use of radioisotopes, as appropriate, for protocols using animals
 
Institutional Biosafety Committee:
  • Reviews research for compliance with NIH Guidelines for Research with Recombinant DNA Molecules
  • Advises the IACUC on the appropriate procedures for safe conduct of animal use involving recombinant DNA
  • Conducts joint training programs for research personnel using recombinant DNA
 
Office of Sponsored Projects:
  • Verifies IACUC review and approval as per agency requirements and University policy
  • Provides assurances of compliance with agency requirements and University policy concerning animal use and welfare
